Gilbert and Queen Creek are full of newer homes with great layouts, and a lot of them still have the cabinets that came with the house. Builder-grade cabinets do the job, but they’re usually where builders save money. Upgrading them is one of the most noticeable improvements you can make.
Signs you have builder-grade cabinets
- Particleboard boxes that chip, swell or sag, especially under the sink
- Doors and drawers that slam because they don’t have soft-close hinges or slides
- Short upper cabinets with an empty gap between the cabinets and the ceiling
- Very few drawers, with mostly doors and fixed shelves in the lower cabinets
- Flat, thin doors in a basic finish that has started to wear
Upgrades that make the biggest difference
Taller upper cabinets. Many newer homes have high ceilings. Running cabinets closer to the ceiling, or stacking a second row of uppers, adds storage and makes the kitchen feel custom.
Drawers instead of doors. Deep drawers for pots, pans and dishes are easier to use than reaching into the back of a base cabinet.
A better island. A bigger island with seating, storage on both sides or a contrasting color is often the centerpiece of the upgrade.
Smarter storage. Pull-out trash, spice and tray organizers, and a pantry wall make busy family kitchens work better every day.
Better construction. Sturdier boxes and soft-close hardware feel better from day one and hold up for years.
What to plan for
- Countertops: replacing base cabinets usually means new countertops, since existing tops often can’t be removed and reused without damage.
- Backsplash and paint: plan to touch up or replace them once the old cabinets come out.
- Flooring: some homes have flooring that stops under the cabinets. If your new layout changes, the floor may need attention.
- Timing: keeping the same layout is the fastest and most affordable path. Learn more in our cabinet timeline guide.
